Our Hungarian Studies offers chance for our students to acquire high level proficiency in interdisciplinary knowledge concerning the literary, linguistic, historical, ethnographic and art heritage of Hungary and the multicultural Carpathian Basin.
According to all available statistics, the institutes responsible for the Hungarian Studies training at the University of Debrecen belong to the most significant humanities workshops in the country and within the wider region. We offer excellent conditions: prominent teaching and research staff, extensive scholarly connections in Hungary and abroad, potent tender background, remarkable talent management programs and scholarship facilities.
The aim of the training
The goal of Hungarian Studies Master’s program is to supply our students with interdisciplinary knowledge concerning the literary, linguistic, historical, ethnographic and art heritage of Hungary and the multicultural Carpathian Basin. Those acquiring degree in our institute will be able to fulfill invaluable tasks in the wider cultural sphere in Hungary and abroad interpreting, researching and mediating this complex cultural tradition.
Who do we expect?
We are happy to welcome those who are interested in Hungarian Studies, desiring to have a complex (literary, historical, ethnographical) knowledge, and who have already acquired their Bachelor Degrees in one of the following majors: History, Hungarian Studies, Ethnography, English and American Studies, German Studies, Romanistics, Slavic Studies, Eastern Languages and Cultures, Liberal Arts (with any of the following specializations: Aesthetics, Art History, Communication and Media Studies, Film Theory and History), International Studies, Political Science, Communication and Media Studies, Cultural Anthropology.
Besides, we also expect students from Central-Europe and the other parts of the world whose Hungarian language proficiency is not adequate, but who are still interested in the culture of Hungary and the Carpathian Basin. For them we offer a Hungarian language preparation course for the overwhelmingly Hungarian training: either prior to the registration or during the first year of the Master’s training. The courses of the Summer University of Debrecen, established in 1927, grant excellent opportunity to attain this language knowledge.
Prospects after graduation
- The Hungarian Studies Master’s program can be continued in three types of PhD training within our university: in the Literary Studies, the Linguistic Studies or the History-Ethnography Doctoral Schools and thereafter even scholarly researcher careers are possible.
- The educational and communicational tasks of scholars specialized in Hungarian Studies are the high quality representation, mediation and popularization of Hungary’s national heritage at various places: in Hungary and in the surrounding countries, in Europe and other parts of the world, so they have the chance to hold positions in various cultural institutes, at newspapers, in politics as a regional expert, or in the Hungarian diplomatic network.
